Our Story

How it all started...

Emanuel Baptist Church began with the call of God on the life of Rev. Smith Syrus. The church consisted of a small body of faithful believers who went from house to house with different ones offering up their homes for Sunday Services.

On one Sunday afternoon in the late 1920’s, in the home of Sister Hattie Brown, Rev. Syrus met with prayerful purpose. On that day in the presence of God, Sister Brown, Sister Cora Davis and Rev. Syrus the Emanuel Baptist Church was formed.

Expanding the vision...

In 1949 Rev. Thomas T. Weaver was called back to Emanuel, which still had no church and only three members, to come back and build a church. Church services were held in the garage of Sister Coley Lee and with the prayers and work of a faithful few, God touched the hearts of many souls both far and near that supported the building of the church with free labor. Under the leadership of Rev. Weaver the church was erected and in September of 1952, Mr. Robert Ceriss, the first black postmaster in New Jersey and Worshipful Master of the Masonic King Herm, the cornerstone was place to commemorate the erection of the edifice we are in today. The Emanuel Baptist Church.

Where we are headed...

As Emanuel Baptist Church continues on this earthly journey to to the conclusion, We prayerful that God will continue to dwell within the this building which is called Emanuel Baptist Church and that He will give us a deeper revelation of Himself in our lives.

Let us strive to grow in the knowledge, grace, and truth of Him.

Believe it or not, for all that Emanuel Baptist Church has seen over the years, God has even more in store for this great church and His people. We solicit your continued prayers in the ministry here and pray that the God of grace, mercy, and peace will forever be in your lives, your homes, and every endeavor you undertake.
